Kurt Brian Webb is an Illinois printmaker whose woodcuts create social commentary that provokes the viewer through humor , satire, and cynicism. Webb’s Dance of Death series uses images of soldiers unknowingly intermingled with malevolent skeletal figures. Each two-color print is printed directly from a woodblock onto Japanese paper and is superimposed over a contemporary news story related to death and the war in Iraq.

Voices of American Farm Women present a contemporary perspective on women in agriculture. Photographer Cynthia Vagnetti has documented women from across the U.S. whose farming techniques promote environmental responsibility, economic stability, and community well-being. The exhibition integrates the power of image and word through oral history interviews conducted with the subjects of Vagnetti’s work. The 30 striking black-and-white photographs explore a diverse group of women and their relationship to the land.

Does the media’s idea of the perfect body leave you out of the picture? Do you agree with the statement that “art may imitate life, but life imitates
TV”*?

Put Yourself in the MEdia Film Festival is not your normal film festival. First off, the films being shown will be turning the cameras back towards the media to challenge us to take wrestling, music videos, and fashion ads seriously, even if just for a moment. The films will cover issues ranging from the ‘race to the thinnest’ for female bodies, how the media distorts
reality to dangerous effects, and hyper-masculinity and the growing objectification of men in the media.

Second, you can drop in for 2 hours, 10 minutes, or between classes with a bagel. We’re not going to judge you. Although, feel free to turn a critical eye on the media. The movies that will be shown will show you how to be media savvy even if you only have time for one segment. Get ready to laugh, think, and have your eyes opened to the many messages the media throws your way every day.
