This semester’s environmental science colloquiums continue with “The Sunlit Earth: Land Surface Reflectance and Albedo from Satellite Sensors.” Crystal Schaaf, a research associate professor from Boston University’s Department of Geography and the Center for Remote Sensing, will discuss the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) Albedo and Reflectance Anisotropy products that have been available in recent years. With eight years of newly reprocessed data available by this summer, the MODIS Albedo and Reflectance Anisotropy products are being used extensively for climate and biogeochemical model initialization and tuning, land cover and land use characterization, vegetation phenology monitoring, cryrospheric, and hydrologic monitoring and weather forecasting. An update will be presented on the latest version of the data and on the validation efforts underway.
