Penelope Barrett, a printmaker from Vermont, documents the consequences of war as displayed in the daily news, in the tradition of Goya, Daumier, and Posada. Her depictions of military brutality leave no doubt about her view of the deceit of political leaders. In addition, Bennett’s etchings on industrial themes expresses the isolation that the individual experiences in today’s industrialized world. The images of naked flesh against steel pipes carries an implicit message of the toxicity to humankind in today’s industrialized society.

Boyd 144

A sequel to the film End of Suburbia, this film examines how modern civilization is approaching the limits of growth and the end of cheap oil, the basis of North American life in the 21st century. It focuses on suburbs as both the symbol and cause of problems, and examines several couples who have chosen to opt out of the so-called “American Dream” to live more responsible, meaningful lives.
