This exhibition will explore aspects of textile history, function, and design. Making textile is a basic human activity that spans virtually every culture and civilization, yet it is also among the most elaborate of artistic undertakings. Rich with symbolic and functional history, the textile industry was the first industry to be fully mechanized in Western Europe and helped usher in the Industrial Revolution. Strong economic pressure and market demand have remained integral to the process of constant upgrade in technologies for design and production of textiles.

The exhibition features an array of works by  textile designer Amin Kalaf.

Which came first; the story or the illustration? When you think about the illustrated stories that you’ve read, whether they have been in the form of a graphic novel, a picture book, or comic strip–you might ask yourself this question.

In an exploration of the collaborative process between an illustrator and author, Plymouth State University presents Illustrating VanderMeer: a glimpse into the collaborative works of Author, Jeff VanderMeer and Illustrator, Eric Schaller, October 15 – November 23 at Lamson Library.

The Plymouth State University Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance presents Woodwind Day at the Silver Center for the Arts.

This hands-on workshop for high school students grades 9-12 will feature Plymouth State University faculty Rik Pfenninger-saxophones, Kenda Corcoran-oboe, Aubrie Dionne-flute, Debbie Gibson-clarinet, and Cheryl Billings-bassoon. Woodwind day will feature instruction on the tone development, extended techniques, articulation, classical and jazz repertoire selection, reed adjustment, and ensemble performance techniques with PSU woodwind faculty.

Events are free and open to the public, but advanced registration is required. Students should plan on bringing their instruments as well as any solos or method books that they may be working on with their teachers.

ETC presents Godspell. Join ETC for the a musical adventure the whole family can enjoy together.

Auditions for this popular musical will be held:

• Sunday, Nov. 1 from 2–3:30 p.m. children grades 3­–5; 4–5:30 p.m. for students grades 6–8 and 6:30–9:30 p.m. for high school and  university students, faculty, staff and community members. Sunday is the preferred time for all children.
• Monday, Nov. 2 from 5–6:30 p.m. for students grades 3–8; and 7–10 p.m. for high school and university students, faculty, staff and community members.
• Tuesday, Nov. 3 from 5–10 p.m. for high school and  university students, faculty, staff and community members.

Some children in grades three through five will be cast in an exciting CIRCUS pre-show to be performed prior to each Godspell performance. Expertise in circus skills such as juggling, unicycling, and tumbling are a plus!

Children in grades 3-8 will be auditioned in groups and do not need to prepare anything in advance, or schedule an individual time.

High school and university students, faculty, staff and community members must come prepared with a song and schedule an audition time by calling Brenda Gleich at (603) 535-2803.

Everyone should wear loose, comfortable clothes and shoes for the auditions.

Counseling Center – Hagedorn Library

Weekly Meditation & Stress Management Workshop — The Counseling Center is offering a weekly Meditation & Stress Management Workshop for students starting on Monday, October 19, 2009.

The group will start at 1:15 p.m. and end at 2:25 p.m. and will take place in the Hagedorn Library at the Counseling Center.

Lamson Library and Learning Commons

The Lamson Library and Learning Commons invites the campus and community to revisit the last days of the Cuban Republic with Professor Emeritus of History, Manuel Marquez-Sterling.  Dr. Sterling will discuss his recently published book, CUBA 1952-1959: The True Story of Castro’s Rise to Power, on Tuesday November 3, 2009.

Dr. Sterling was a witness to history in the seven critical years 1952-1959 when the struggle for Cuba was not just between Fulgencio Batista and Fidel Castro only, but also a third force that advocated for a peaceful, democratic resolution.  Elections were held on November 3, 1958 and Dr. Sterling’s father, Carlos Marquez-Sterling, was a candidate for President.  His father won easily, but there was rampant electoral fraud, due to Batista and the Army.  Six weeks after the election, Batista fled Cuba and Castro’s revolution took over the country.

Dr. Sterling’s book destroys many myths about Cuba and shows that it was a progressive country with a prosperous situation, and in the fast lane to become a First World country, with a large Middle Class, a fine educational system open to all classes, and with high standards of living.

Copies of Dr. Sterling’s book will be available for purchase. The campus and Plymouth community are welcome to attend.

An important connection between faculty and students occurs when faculty exhibit their own work. This special exhibition presents an opportunity for students and members of the PSU community to become better acquainted with art department faculty outside the classroom, as artists working in a variety of media. Whether they are presenting works from early in their careers, current pieces, or experimental work, faculty welcome viewers into the private realm of the teacher as artist.

7pm, Smith Recital Hall @ Silver Center for the Arts

Born in 1970, Kevin Young is widely regarded as one of the leading poets of his generation, one who finds meaning and inspiration in African American music, particularly the blues, and in the bittersweet history of Black America. His newest book is Dear Darkness (Knopf, 2008). His earlier collection, Black Maria: Poems Produced and Directed by Kevin Young is a “film noir in verse,” a playful homage to the language and imagery of Hollywood detective films. He currently is a professor of poetry at Emory University.

All readings are free and followed by a reception and book signing.
