Film Festival for Amnesty International

Amnesty International will host their first film festival all this week. Each movie will focus on human rights or the lack thereof around the world.

Monday, December 1: Born into Brothels. Set in Calcutta’s notorious red-light district, Born Into Brothels explores the lives of its most vulnerable citizens. The move focuses on 8 young subjects as they address the threat that at any time they could be forced into prostitution.

Tuesday, December 2: War/Dance. War/Dance reveals the redemptive power of music, even in the most horrific places, by focusing on the lives of three children in their early teens in war-torn Uganda.

Wednesday, December 3: Taxi to the Dark Side. Taxi to the Dark Side takes an in-depth look at one case: an Afghan taxi driver called Dilawar who was considered an honest and kind man by the people of his rustic village. So when he was detained by the U.S military one afternoon, after picking up three passengers, denizens wondered why this man was randomly chosen to be held in prison, and, especially, without trial?

Thursday, December 4: The Devil Came on Horseback. This film presents a first person account of the genocide in Darfur. Former Marine Captain Brian Steidle joined the African Union in 2004 to help monitor the cease-fire of Sudan. As he puts it, “All I had was a camera, a pen, and paper. I was totally unprepared for what I’d see.”
