This exhibition will explore aspects of textile history, function, and design. Making textile is a basic human activity that spans virtually every culture and civilization, yet it is also among the most elaborate of artistic undertakings. Rich with symbolic and functional history, the textile industry was the first industry to be fully mechanized in Western Europe and helped usher in the Industrial Revolution. Strong economic pressure and market demand have remained integral to the process of constant upgrade in technologies for design and production of textiles.

The exhibition features an array of works by  textile designer Amin Kalaf.

In an exploration of the collaborative process between an illustrator and author, Plymouth State University presents Illustrating VanderMeer: a glimpse into the collaborative works of Author, Jeff VanderMeer and Illustrator, Eric Schaller, October 15 – November 23 at Lamson Library.

Silver Center for the Arts

The annual All New England Band Festival, featuring 175 high school musicians, will culminate in a performance at the Silver Center for the Arts on the Plymouth State University Campus.

The concert will conclude a day-long event involving honor band members representing 60 high schools from all six New England states. The students were chosen from more almost 400 who applied for the festival from a total of 68 high schools. Selections were based on students individual musical achievements while attending the schools they are representing. More than two-thirds of those selected have been members of their respective all-state bands or orchestras.

Guest conductors for the 2009 festival are Robert Sheldon and Christopher Tucker. Both are nationally known composers of band music and have numerous published and recorded works to their credit.

The festival bands will share the concert with the Plymouth State University Symphonic Band, conducted by Gary Corcoran. The Colonial Brass of the United States Air Force Band of Liberty will join with the PSU Band in a performance os a suite from Mass by Leonard Bernstein. The university band will perform works by Paul Dukas, Edward Madden and Percy Grainger.

PSU students and faculty/staff are admitted free. Other tickets for the performance are $7.00 and will be available at the door.

We have secured a limited number of Holiday Pops tickets for mid-December and will once again have dinner at Legal Seafoods in the Prudential Center. Dinner will be at 5 p.m. to allow us time for a leisurely dinner before walking to the concert in Symphony Hall.
